Federal Courts

Although federal courts located in DC are not part of the District government, they are included here for reference.

This court hears all bankruptcy cases in the District.  Bankruptcy cases cannot be filed in the DC Courts. The Bankruptcy Court allows debtors to get a fresh start by relieving them of most debts. When there is property available for payment, the court facilitates the repayment of creditors.

The US Tax Court hears Federal tax cases in which taxpayers may complete their court challenges without first paying the Federal taxes they dispute.

This court hears certain appeals from the District Court, as well as appeals from the US Tax Court.

The US Supreme Court is the highest court of the Federal Judicial Branch, hearing appeals from the Federal Courts of Appeals, and certain other cases.
